This contribution presents the characteristics and benefits industrial organizations can reap from the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). These characteristics and benefits include enhanced competitiveness, increased proactive decision-making, improved creativity and innovation, augmented job creation, heightened agility to respond to continuously changing challenges, and intensified data-driven decision making. In a straightforward fashion, the presentation also helps audience understand complex concepts that are core to IIoT enterprises, such as Big Data, analytic architecture platforms, machine learning (ML) and data science algorithms, and the power of visualization to enrich the domains experts’ decision making. Aldo Dagnino received the M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the Department of Systems Design Engineering, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada, in 1984 and 1987, respectively.,He has over 20 years of experience in the software industry. He is currently leading the Advanced Analytics Global IS group at ABB, Cary, NC, USA. From 2009 to 2016, he led the Industrial Analytics Research work at ABB Corporate Research, where he worked in Industrial Analytic applications and successfully completed several projects in this field that resulted in commercial products and services for ABB. He is currently an Adjunct Assistant Faculty Member with the Department of Computer Science, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, USA, where he is involved in collaborative research with other faculty members and teaches graduate courses in the department. His applied research areas include software engineering, software architectures, data mining, and knowledge-intensive systems applied to industrial systems.
